Disasters, Appeals and Starvation.

So last night I sat down to a big plate of sausage and bacon (we all need to do our thing for british pig farmers) and lo and behold what do I find when flicking the switch on the radio, nothing other than Kate Adie pleading for me to hand over sums of money to the "Disasters Emergency Committee" to buy food for the starving of East Africa. Again.

I think it is time someone had the balls to ask three very simple questions.
  1. First of all, how much of this is REALLY down to 'crop failure' and how much is down to population numbers in these countries and others swelling way, WAY beyond what the planet can support.
  2. Secondly, how much of the lack of food is caused by a failure of the crops to grow, and how much is down to the fact that it's damn difficult planting a crop, never mind tending it and harvesting it, while warlords and their followers are lobbing granades, launching rockets and just generally shooting at each other and anyone else they take a fancy at using for target practice over the months it takes for the harvest to come to fruition.

I take it we all remember how last month the Syrian Head Tyrant ordered tanks to flamethrow and bomb the fields around a village he felt the need to destroy, so that all could see what happens to those who dissent.

How long will it be before DEC are whingeing and rubbing their hands pleading for more of our money to feed the survivors of that Syrian earth scorching I wonder ? And will anyone have the memory to recall why they have no food, and will the "oh so politically correct BBC" allow anyone to say why ? I doubt it.

  3. Thirdly - and my final word for the moment - how much of that DEC cash is going to end up paying for some warlord's golden throne to sit on take a dump in and flush his worries away ?
I think these are questions that need to have answers before I reach for my cheque book, don't you ?
